Town caucus nominates candidates

The process for selecting township officials begins in January.

Most towns hold caucuses for determining whose names will appear on the April 2 ballot.

Caucus participants may place up to two names for each position on the ballot. These are usually for town chairman, town supervisors, town clerk and treasurer.

Unlike other Wisconsin elections, there is no absentee voting for a caucus.

Residents must be physically present to nominate and to vote. Also unique to the caucuses is the fact one does not have to be a registered voter to participate.

Anyone who is at least 18 years old and has resided in the town for at least 10 days may participate in local government.

Towns that do not hold a caucus require candidates to contact the town clerk to obtain and circulate nomination papers.

The papers must then be returned in early January.
