W-F wrestlers place fifth

Coleman wins Cutler Classic

By Greg Seubert

The Weyauwega-Fremont wrestling team has been facing some of the state’s top programs this season.

That trend continued Jan. 12 at the Cutler Classic at New London High School. The Indians had a pair of wrestlers make the 16-team tournament’s finals, but ended up fifth overall.

The Indians also handed Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli a 52-21 defeat Jan. 10 in a Central Wisconsin Conference dual meet.

Cian Fischer improved to 29-0 on the season by pinning Pulaski’s Cole Gille in 4:16 to win the 126-pound championship, while Logan Kicherer placed second after dropping a 10-1 decision to Coleman’s Bryce Karban at 152 and now has a 22-8 record.

“This was the fifth tournament of the season that Fischer has won as he continues to dominate everyone he wrestles,” coach Tim Potratz said. “Kicherer wrestled his way to the finals with an outstanding effort that included defeating an unbeaten Appleton East wrestler in the semifinals. This was the third tournament final for Kicherer this season, but he came up short against his Coleman opponent in the championship match.”

Coleman won the tournament with 281 points, followed by Pulaski (194), De Pere (187), Wisconsin Rapids (182.5), Weyauwega-Fremont (158.5), Princeton (108), Dodgeland (105.5), New London (104), Oshkosh North (99.5), Southern Door (75), Waupaca (63), Ripon (39), Menasha and Sturgeon Bay (37), Wabeno/Laona (28) and Appleton East (15).

“All season, we have been wrestling the top teams in the state and this tournament was no exception,” Potratz said. “The bad news is we wrestled short-handed again with only nine varsity wrestlers competing out of the 14 weight classes. The good news is that all nine boys won at least two matches in the tournament and they all placed in the top eight of their weight class.”

Carter Greening (23-6), Justin Kempf (26-3) and Tyler Wetzel (26-4) placed third at 120, 132 and 182, respectively; Ben Strehlow (19-9) and Austin Bartel (17-12) finished fourth at 170 and 220; and Adam Batten (15-10) and Ean Marker (20-11) placed eighth at 138 and 145.

Mason Marquette and Skylor Maynard placed second at 132 and 195 pounds, respectively, in the junior varsity competition.

W-F 52, A-B/Pacelli 21
One win and three forfeits gave Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli a 21-0 lead after four matches, but the Indians scored the meet’s next 52 points.

Greening pinned Damion Wiza in 1:40 at 120, Kempf pinned Aidan Whitman in 16 seconds at 145 and Strehlow pinned Evan Ramczyk in 1:25 at 182.

A-B/Pacelli also forfeited matches to Fischer (126), Batten (138), Marker (145), Kicherer (160), Max Meyerhofer (170) and Wetzel (195).

Derek Lockhart had A-B/Pacelli’s only contested win, a 10-3 decision over Bartel at 220.

The Indians will host Amherst at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, for Parents’ Night. The 2004 conference champion team will also be honored before the dual meet.
