Comets double up Marshfield

A pair of hat tricks added up to a win for the Waupaca boys’ hockey team.
Cody Rasmussen and Mitchell Trzebiatowski each scored three goals Jan. 15 in the Comets’ 6-3 win over Marshfield at the Waupaca Ice and Expo Center.
Marshfield took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game on a goal from Ben Lawyer, but Rasmussen tied the game two minutes later with an unassisted goal and gave Waupaca the lead for good later in the period on a goal off of an assist from Jack Menzies. Trzebiatowski scored his first goal midway through the period and the Comets had a 3-1 lead at the break.
Trzebiatowski gave Waupaca a 4-1 lead in the second period, with Jed VandenBush getting credit for the assist. Rasmussen completed his hat trick before Marshfield’s Sawyer Schindler scored to cut Waupaca’s lead to 5-2 heading into the third period.
Issac Wellens scored for Marshfield a minute into the third period, but Trzebiatowski capped the scoring with his third goal with a minute to go in the game.
The Tigers outshot the Comets 35-25.
Waupaca will head to Eagle River to take on Northland Pines at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18. Both teams will head into the game with 6-0 records in Great Northern Conference play.
The Comets are then off until opening the conference tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, with the opponent and location to be determined.
