W-F falls at sectional

Stratford beats Coleman in final

By Greg Seubert

A trip to the WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament was not in the cards this season for the Weyauwega-Fremont wrestling team.

The Indians came out on the short end of a 54-24 score to Coleman Feb. 13 in the semifinals of a four-team Division 3 team sectional in Auburndale.

Coleman will not advance to state as a team, either, as the Cougars dropped a 33-27 decision to Stratford in the final. Stratford advanced to the final with a 61-21 win over Crandon in the other semifinal match.

Weyauwega-Fremont took a 6-0 lead after the Cougars forfeited the first match to Justin Kempf at 132 pounds.

Jakob Horton handed Weyauwega-Fremont’s Adam Batten a 6-0 loss at 138 and the Cougars took the lead for good after Jake Baldwin pinned Mason Marquette in 27 seconds at 145.

Coleman extended its lead to 24-6 with Bryce Karban’s 9-2 win over Logan Kicherer at 152, Tyler Blanchard’s pin of Ben Strehlow in 1:17 at 160 and Shamus McLain’s pin of Max Meyerhofer in 1:33 at 170.

Tyler Wetzel came up with the Indians’ only pin of the match at 182, as he took care of Cole Klimek in 52 seconds.

Coleman’s Jonathon Bieber pinned Skylor Maynard in 1:25 at 195 and the Cougars forfeited the 220-pound match to Austin Bartel.

The Indians then forfeited to Brock Martinson (285), Chance Graber (106) and Koltin Grzybowski (113) before the Cougars forfeited the 120-pound match to Cian Fischer.

Coleman then wrapped up the match with Caleb Gross’ pin of Easton Groskreutz in 1:52 at 126.
