Speaker to discuss redistricting

Winchester Academy hosts Fair Elections Project director

Chheda

Sachin Chheda will present “Fair Maps: How Redistricting Reform Will Strengthen Democracy” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Chheda is director of the Fair Elections Project, a nonprofit, nonpartisan campaign to make American elections meaningful.

Dale Schultz, former state senator and co-chair of the Fair Elections Project explains its foundation: “Democracy requires access for every citizen, and it requires truly competitive elections. When elections aren’t competitive, we see corruption, and we see hubris.”

The Fair Elections Project organized and launched Whitford v. Gill, challenging Wisconsin’s legislative district maps for being an unfair, unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.

In addition, the Fair Elections Project helps to lead the fight to end map-rigging and political gerrymandering in Wisconsin and across the country. This includes research, supporting litigation, advocating for legislation, and inspiring citizen activism to make elections meaningful.

A special three-judge panel in U.S. District Court ruled in favor of the Whitford plaintiffs in late 2016, declaring Wisconsin’s legislative district maps violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

The case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, and it will continue with additional proceedings in federal courts in April 2019.

Chheda, who attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, as well as UW-Madison, works primarily with corporate, labor, political and nonprofit clients on strategic planning, management and public relations. He has more than 20 years of political and campaign issue experience.

The free program is sponsored by Winchester Academy. It is open to the public.

Cookies and coffee are served at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30 p.m.

Winchester Academy is funded by sponsors tax-deductible donations.

Chheda’s program is sponsored by Carol Elvery and Bruce Inkmann.
