Erratic behavior leads to arrest

A man who held off Waupaca police for an hour is now in custody.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Main and Granite streets for a suspicious person shortly before 10:40 a.m. Monday, March 4.

According to Police Chief Brian Hoelzel, officers encountered a 36-year-old Waupaca man walking in the middle of Center Street holding a long, sharp letter opener and acting erratically.

The man refused to drop the letter opener and refused to exit the road.

He told police that they would have to shoot him and he threatened to stab a K9 if it approached him.

After about an hour of negotiations, the man dropped the letter opener and was taken into custody.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Hoelzel said the man was transported the ThedaCare in Waupaca for medical evaluation and a mental health assessment.

The police are still investigating the incident, Heolzel said.
