Man accused of sex crimes

A suspect who was in prison for sexual assault faces new charges.

Phillip J. Curler, 54, Oshkosh Correctional, is charged with second-degree sexual assault of a mentally disabled victim and exposing his genitals to a child.

On Aug. 11, 2016, Waupaca Police Officer Wesley Zube spoke with a Coleman school administrator who said a 17-year-old girl had whispered to the cheerleading coach that she was no longer a virgin.

The girl then told the coach she had sex with her mother’s boyfriend, identified as Curler.

According to the criminal complaint, the girl, her mother and Curler were sitting on a sofa watching a movie when her mother left the room.

The girl told Zube that Curler began touching her in appropriately.

When she told him to stop and tried to push him away, Curler allegedly forced himself on her.

In February 2001, Curler was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in Milwaukee County and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

On May 14, 2013, he was released on eight years of extended supervision.

On Nov. 21, 2016, his extended supervision was revoked and he was sent back to prison.

Curler is scheduled for mandatory release to extended supervision in February 2021.

He faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of second-degree sexual assault.
