Gohla, Mary Grace Elizabeth (Roth)

Mary Grace Elizabeth (Roth) Gohla was born January 5, 1931 and died peacefully with family by her side on March 8, 2019 at Bethany Nursing Home in Waupaca, WI.

She had just recently celebrated her 88th birthday. She was born in Ashton, Iowa to Louis and Margaret Roth and was one of ten children. She married Francis Joseph Gohla on June 2, 1956 at Our Lady Perpetual Help Church in Ashton, IA. After high school, she received a nursing degree from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing at Sioux City in 1952. She worked for three years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Minneapolis, MN then married Francis Gohla and they moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin. Grace and Fran were devout Catholics and members of St. Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church. After 20 years employed as a nurse at Waupaca Hospital, Grace retired. She was passionate about music and loved playing piano in her home and at church services. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking and swimming. She loved watching sports teams with Fran, including the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers. More than anything though, Grace loved her family and found tremendous joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren and extended family in Iowa.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband Fran and brothers, Cletus Roth and Kelly Roth. Grace is survived by her sisters, Mary Ann Mehne, Muskegon, MI; Mary Colette Kalous, Marion IA; and Mary Alene Poss, New Hope, MN; and her brothers, Clair Roth, Minneapolis, MN; Cecil Roth, Ashton IA; Clifford Roth, Estherville, IA; and Joseph Roth, Ashton Iowa. She is also survived by her eight children: Joe Gohla, Madison, WI; Marge (Dave) Rice, Elgin, IL; Joan Nelson, Littleton, CO; Tim (Connie) Gohla, Jordan, MN; Mark Gohla, Oshkosh, WI; Rita (Craig) Mortenson, Verona, WI; Dennis (Teresa) Gohla, Houlton, WI; Mona (Robert) Teffeteller, Eagle, ID. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren: Oesten, Christyn, Svea, Erica, Brittany, Daniel, Matthew, Rachel, Aaron, Marlo, Dawson, Anna, Cole, and four great-grandchildren: Samuel, Noah, Evelynn and Luke.

The memorial services for Grace will be held on Saturday, April 27th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca, WI. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday at church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund to benefit the Waupaca community has been established in Grace Gohla’s name in care of Tim Gohla, 19386 Vergus Avenue, Jordan, MN, 55352.
