McCoy to coach W-F softball

Team has new coach, new pitchers

The area’s most successful high school softball program will enter its 2019 season with a new coach and revamped pitching staff.

Weyauwega-Fremont, a state qualifier the past two years, is scheduled to open its season at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, with a nonconference home game against Thorp, although that game is likely to be postponed due to the weather and field conditions.

First-year coach Brianne McCoy has to replace four-year varsity pitchers Cadyn Ehrenberg and Kiley Akey, now playing college softball at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, respectively.

The Indians are coming off of a 22-5 season and a Central Wisconsin Conference East Division championship. Their 2018 season ended with a 5-4 loss to Thorp in a Division 3 state semifinal in Madison.

McCoy replaces Todd Breuer, who coached the Indians to a 101-36 record over the last five seasons that included a 5-0 loss to Laconia in the Division 3 state championship game in 2017. Breuer’s teams also posted a 56-11 record in CWC East Division games from 2014-18 as well as division championships in three of the last four years.

Breuer stepped down shortly after the 2018 season ended and the position remained open until McCoy recently applied.

“I probably looked at the position about 50 times,” she said. “It was just a matter of being to make it work with my work schedule along with family life.”

McCoy, also Weyauwega-Fremont’s junior varsity volleyball coach, is looking forward to running a successful program.

“It’s pretty exciting,” she said. “When you come into the gym, you see that they work hard all the time. That tradition is going to continue on through the next couple of years. It’s not going to stop.”

The team began indoor practices March 11.

“We’re running practices pretty much the same as normal,” McCoy said. “We get the cage out, we hit, we field, we do as much as we possibly can do here in the gym. Once some of the snow starts melting, we’ll be outside.”

The Indians will compete in the CWC East Division with Amherst, Bonduel, Iola-Scandinavia, Menominee Indian, Shiocton and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

“They’d like to do the same thing they’ve been doing in the past,” McCoy said. “They want to win conference, win as many games as they can and get back to state.”

Besides Ehrenberg and Akey, the Indians also lost Kati Kettleson and Alexa Greening from last year’s team.

“We have about five girls that played last year,” McCoy said. “They’re our leaders this year and they’re doing a great job.”

Those players include seniors Rylee Bartel and Jaelyn Reeck and juniors Alicia Lederhaus, Julia Rice and Taylor Folk.

“I haven’t had a chance to get them out on the field,” McCoy said. “Once I do that, I’ll probably have a starting lineup in mind. There are definitely some girls that will have the potential to fill in those leadership roles.”

McCoy’s first order of business is replacing Ehrenberg and Akey.

“We have a couple good pitchers,” she said. “We have Ashley Johnson and Anna Meyer. Taylor Folk will probably see some time on the mound.”

That’s not a lot of experience on the mound, but McCoy isn’t worried.

“I don’t think it’s a concern because these girls are ready to work and they know what our goals are,” she said. “Once we get out on the field and they get a couple of games under our belt, we’ll settle down. We’ll have to buckle down and do what we have to do to get the wins we need to get.”

Depending on the weather, the Indians could play as many as five games in March, including the first four at home.

“They’re really looking forward to getting on the field and they’re looking forward,” McCoy said. “They know we have a lot of goals to accomplish and we have a lot of work to do. They’re preparing for that.”
