New swim coach in Iola

Practice begins in June

The Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness and Aquatic Center has a new coach for its swim team.

Courtney Gravunder will lead beginning this summer, center director Tim Welch said.

“Courtney has swim team experience and has been involved in swim team for many years,” he said. “She has been an asset to our swimming lesson programs this winter. She is outgoing, loves all the indoor pool sports, is very organized and will communicate well with families and children.”

Gravunder is looking forward to the experience.

“I joined the swim team when I was 6 years old and fell in love with it,” she said. “I am hoping to give the area kids that same experience and I am looking forward to watching them grow, make new friends and just having fun.”

Swimming is a skill that everyone should learn, according to Gravunder.

“It can be competitive, but is also fun,” she said. “It’s something that you can do for you entire life.”

Welch hopes she will stay long-term.

“To have a quality program, consistency is important and we are striving for that with our coaches,” he said.

Gravunder replaces Lee Platta.

“We thank Lee and staff for their hard work the last two years,” Welch said.

Team practices will begin June 10.

“The swim team has been a great way for young people to get a taste of competition in a very positive way at a young age,” Welch said. “Swimming is very much an individual sport and you can always improve your personal best each day.”
