Reckless endangerment charged

Two 31-year-old men argued about an 18-year-old woman, then one of them shot the other in the foot.

Jordan S. May, 31, Lind, is charged with first-degree reckless endangerment. He was released from custody on a $5,000 signature bond.

According to the criminal complaint, Waupaca County deputies went to a home on Bags Hill Road in the town of Lind at 1:21 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in response to a reported shooting.

When Deputy Pat Gorchals arrived at the scene, he discovered that Detective Sgt. Nick Traeger and the shooting victim were behind a pickup truck for protection. Other deputies also went there to assist.

Gorchals provided cover from the garage, while Traeger placed the victim, identified as Jason Toutant, 31, of Janesville, into the back of the truck and drove away.

Later, May exited the house and directed the deputies to where he had placed the rifle in a tree.

According to the criminal complaint, Toutant’s aunt and uncle gave him a ride to the May’s home.

Toutant allegedly went there to see an 18-year-old woman, who was staying with May.

He told Traeger he hoped to marry her, did not know if she was OK or being held hostage, and refused to leave until he saw her, according to the complaint.

The woman was not at May’s house at the time.

Toutant said May met him at the door, holding a rifle, and they argued about the woman.

Toutant told Traeger that May threatened him and pointed the rifle at his chest.

May’s grandfather told deputies he was inside the house when he heard two shots.

The first shot went into the ground. After the second shot, the grandfather heard Toutant yell, “I’m bleeding. I’m bleeding.”

Toutant then yelled at his aunt and uncle to leave and call 911.

The woman told investigators she and May are longtime friends, but they had only been dating a short while.

She said she was never in a relationship with Toutant, but they had known each other for about three years.
