It wasn’t pretty, but the Waupaca softball team picked up a 12-11 nonconference win over Ripon April 22.

It was the first game for the Comets since they dropped a 9-0 North Eastern Conference decision to Luxemburg-Casco April 8.

The Comets opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but soon trailed 9-1 after the Tigers scored five runs in the third and four more in the fourth.

Waupaca tied the game at 9-9 with an eight-run fourth, but Ripon answered with a pair of runs in the fifth.

The Comets tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth and held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the seventh.

Maddie Rhodes reached first base to lead off the bottom of the seventh and eventually scored the game-winning run.

Waupaca improved to 3-4 on the season and returned to North Eastern play April 23 in Clintonville. The Comets will also head to Appleton Thursday, April 25, to face Fox Valley Lutheran before hosting Marinette for a conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday, April 26.
