Waupaca native offers alternative for pain

By Robert Cloud

A vacation to North Carolina and 15 years working at the foundry inspired Lance Niemuth to open The Greenery.

Located in the former Cheesie Bob’s store on County Trunk QQ in King, The Greenery is a CBD store.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in hemp plants, which are related to marijuana.

Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in marijuana, CBD does not cause users to become intoxicated.

“Besides the THC content, it’s the same plant,” Niemuth said. “It’s not a recreational drug. It does not get you high.”

According to a column in Harvard Health Publishing, “The strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases it was able to stop them altogether.”

“I want to be able to help people with a different option for pain relief,” Niemuth said, noting his own aches and pains from working at the foundry.

Studies have also found CBD may help treat insomnia and help lower pain and inflammation from arthritis when applied to the skin.

Further research is needed to substantiate other claims for health benefits and for possible side effects, such as nausea and irritability.

Niemuth said the first time he saw a CBD store was while he was vacationing in North Carolina.

He began researching the product and found a variety of uses for CBD as an alternative medication.

He and Angie Becker, who runs the store, found a wide range of CBD products made in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin legalized the production and sales of industrial hemp, including CBD, in 2017.

“Our tinctures and smokables are produced here in Wisconsin,” Niemuth said.

He noted The Greenery purchases its hemp from a grower in Weyauwega.

Niemuth, who opened the store in late December 2018, said the hardest part of the business is keeping the shelves stocked.

“The store has exceeded my vision by a long shot,” he said. “We were very well received from the day we opened the doors.”

Part of the learning process was responding to what customers want in terms of products.

“Input from the community has helped us,” Becker said.

“We’re super grateful to the community and how supportive they’ve been,” Becker added.

The Greenery is closed on Sundays and Mondays, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
