By Holly Neumann

Four Manawa students will lay a wreath by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery during their middle school trip to Washington, D.C., on May 17-22.

Trip coordinator Jeff Bortle submitted a request in advance and students Emma Riske, Spencer Strebe, Ted Emmert and Ethan Krueger were selected to represent Manawa based on essays they submitted.

Bortle said this is a once in a lifetime experience for the students.

“I hope the students understand the importance and significance of the situation,” he said. “It is very special for our students to be able to be part of such a special event.”

“I am so excited to have our students participate in the laying of the wreath ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery,” added Principal Dan Wolfgram. “Experiences like this will carry significance and create a lasting memory for these students for the rest of their lives.”

Wolfgram said he appreciates all the parents, residents and teachers who helped make this trip happen.
“I believe that the Manawa community has great respect for our servicemen and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice to this country,” he said. “The participation in this ceremony has extreme educational significance for our students.”

Manawa has been taking students to the nation’s capital since 2015.
