Area communities observe Memorial Day

Ceremonies, parades scheduled for Monday, May 27

Memorial Day observances are scheduled on Monday, May 27 in Waupaca, King, New London, Clintonville, Weyauwega, Fremont, Scandinavia, Iola, Manawa, Ogdensburg Bear Creek, Hortonville and Medina.

Following are the schedules for each community:

Waupaca
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1037 and Auxiliary will hold a Memorial Day program with a waterside ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27, at Rotary Riverview Park, located behind Main Street in Waupaca.

Those who are able to walk are asked to park on North Main Street and use the ramp to get to the bandstand.
The Waupaca High School band will perform under the direction of Mark Kryshak.

The VFW honor guard will fire rifles in honor of those who have fallen in service to their country.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in Waupaca High School’s Performing Arts Center.

Those who do not want to stand may bring lawn chairs.

King
The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King will start its Memorial Day ceremonies with the flag placement at 6 a.m. Monday, May 27.

A short lakeside service will take place at the Marden Center, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, N2665 County Trunk QQ.

The featured speakers are VA Secretary-designee Mary M. Kolar and Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes.

The Waupaca Middle School Band will perform.

New London

New London’s Memorial Day ceremony will begin at Taft Park at 9:15 a.m.

Tim Roberts, Iraq War veteran and owner of The Print Shop in New London, will be the featured speaker.

A shorter ceremony will take place at Floral Hill Cemetery around 10 a.m. A bus will be available to take attendees to the cemetery and back to Taft Park.

The local Auxiliary will serve a public luncheon at the American Legion Clubhouse, 840 E. North Water St., following the observance.

In the event of rain, the entire ceremony will take place at New London High School, 1700 Klatt Road.

Clintonville

The Memorial Day observance will begin with a wreath laying in the river at 9:10 a.m. A parade begins at 9:15 a.m.

A ceremony will be held at Graceland Cemetery at 10 a.m. and again at Riverside Cemetery in Embarrass at about 11 a.m.

This year’s guest speaker, 1st Lt. Ralph Williams of the U.S. Army, grew up in Leona and attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he earned degrees in history and English before teaching in Green Bay.

Williams joined the Army and was selected for Officer Candidate School. He served as an artillery instructor at Fort Sill, then was ordered to Vietnam, serving with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Upon completion of his military service, Williams accepted a teaching position in Clintonville, which he held for 34 years. He is retired and resides in Clintonville.

Weyauwega
The Weyauwega Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday, May 27.

It will start at 8:30 a.m. from the veterans’ clubhouse on Mill Street.

The American Legion and VFW posts, along with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Weyauwega Fire Department and Weyauwega-Fremont High School Band, will march to Oakwood Cemetery for the memorial service.

Others interested in being part of the parade are welcome to join it.

The Memorial Day program at the cemetery will feature Waupaca County Veterans Service Officer Jesse Cuff as the guest speaker.

Music will be provided by the W-F High School band, Bill Severin Thompson and Danny Darren.

If it rains, the program will be held at 8:45 a.m. at W-F Middle School, located on Ann Street.

Fremont
Memorial Day observances will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, in Fremont.

Parade units will assemble at 9:30 a.m. in the Fremont-Wolf River American Legion parking lot behind village hall.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed down Fillmore Street to Wolf River Drive to West Main Street before ending on Waupaca Street in front of the Legion Hall.

Anyone who wants to be part of the parade should assemble at the Legion Hall parking lot prior to the parade.

Services will be held, following the parade, at Lakeside Cemetery, along Wolf River Drive.

Legion Post 391 will supervise the cemetery services. The guest speaker will be Fremont Village President Dan Sambs.

After the chaplain offers a prayer, students from Fremont Elementary School will read patriotic poems while Scouts place flowers at the graves of veterans.

Post 391 will then fire rifles into the air in tribute to American’s fallen soldiers.

The ceremony will conclude with the sounding of “Taps.”

A potluck lunch at the Legion clubhouse will follow the ceremony. Those who wish to participate are asked to bring a dish to pass. Grilled sandwiches will be provided.

Iola-Scandinavia
The Iola-Scandinavia area will be observing Memorial Day, on Monday, May 27 beginning at the old bridge on the corn roast grounds in Scandinavia at 10 a.m., followed by honors ceremony at Scandinavia Cemetery at 10:15 a.m.

A parade will follow in Iola at 11 a.m.

The parade will start at the I-S High School parking lot and go past Iola Living Assistance, through the downtown and ending at the Sheveland Taylor Post 14 Legion Memorial Park.

A memorial service will be held at the park with state Rep. Kevin Petersen as the speaker.

The Iola-Scandinavia High School marching band and chorus will perform musical selections for the event.

Following the service, everyone is welcome to attend a pork roast lunch from noon to 2 p.m. at the Iola Historical Society Machine Shed located at 222 Depot Street.

This meal is free of charge for all veterans.

The donation for the dinner for spouses and the general public is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Sodas and bottled water will also be available for purchase from Iola’s Boy Scout Troop 631.

Manawa
Memorial Day services will be observed on Monday, May 27 at the following locations; Royalton Cemetery 9 a.m., Symco Bridge/Symco Cemetery 10 a.m., Manawa Veterans Memorial/Manawa Bridge 11 a.m. and at Manawa Cemetery at 11:45 a.m.

Special guest speakers will be at each cemetery.

A luncheon will follow at 12:15 p.m. at Union Town Hall, E6592 State Highway 22, in Symco. The public is welcome to attend.

Ogdensburg
The Memorial Day program in Ogdensburg will be held in St. Lawrence Veterans Memorial Park.

The Veterans Memorial Dedication will begin at 10 a.m.

Bear Creek

The Bear Creek VFW will conduct graveside ceremonies.

A ceremony will be held at the Danish Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. followed by another at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Bear Creek’s parade will begin at 11 a.m. ending at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Hortonville, Medina, Stephensville

Hortonville’s American Legion Post 55 will host three Memorial Day services May 26-27.

The first will take place on Sunday, May 26, at 11:30 a.m. at Ellington Union Cemetery in Stephensville. The keynote speaker will be John Suprise, Post 55 commander of troops.

Hortonville will hold a memorial service in the Hortonville High School auditorium, 155 Warner St., at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27. Village Administrator David DeTroye will be the speaker.

An assembly will follow outside and culminate with a march to Veteran’s Park for a brief ceremony.

The Legion will then hold a third ceremony and cookout at Armitage Park in Medina at 11:15 a.m.
