Athletes advance to sectionals

W-F boys and girls place second at Rosholt, Waupaca boys third at Berlin

The track season will continue for several area individuals and relay teams after they placed in the top four May 20 at their respective WIAA regional meets.

Waupaca competed with Amherst, Berlin, Little Chute, Omro, Wautoma, Westfield/Montello, Winneconne and Xavier at the Division 2 Berlin Regional, while Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa and Weyauwega-Fremont joined Almond-Bancroft, Assumption, Pacelli, Pittsville, Port Edwards, Rosholt, Tri-County and Wild Rose at a Division 3 regional in Rosholt.

Top-four finishers from the Berlin Regional advanced to the Freedom Sectional, while the top four placers in Rosholt will head to the Marathon Sectional. Both sectionals will be held Thursday, May 23.

Berlin Regional

Berlin edged Little Chute to win the boys’ and girls’ overall championships. Team scores for the boys were Berlin (136 1/2), Little Chute (135), Waupaca (87 1/2), Omro (87), Wautoma (81), Winneconne (80), Xavier (65), Westfield/Montello (14) and Amherst (7). Team scores for the girls were Berlin (132), Little Chute (129 1/2), Winneconne (109 1/2), Wautoma 9102), Xavier (89), Omro (36), Amherst (32), Waupaca (29) and Westfield/Montello (26).

Forrest Ziebell turned in the Comets’ only first-place finish, as he won the boys’ 3,200-meter run in 10:02.07.

Seconds went to Craig McCourt (boys’ 100-meter dash); Terry Schmidt (boys’ 200-meter dash); Britney Bertzyk (girls’ pole vault); and James Sternweis (boys’ shot put).

Thirds went to McCourt (boys’ 200), Sawyer Ziebell (boys’ 3,200) and Christian Pomerenke (boys’ high jump).

Fourths went to Colby Nimmer (boys’ 800-meter run); Alex Orr (boys’ discus); Nimmer, Forrest Ziebell, Caleb Studzinski, Camryn Borland, Abram Jackson and Bryce Boldt (boys’ 3,200-meter relay); and Nimmer, Studzinski, Orr, Borland, Jackson and Boldt (boys’ 1,600-meter relay).

Rosholt Regional

Wild Rose swept the boys’ and girls’ championships. Team scores for the boys were Wild Rose (162), Weyauwega-Fremont (90 1/2), Manawa and Rosholt (84), Pittsville (62), Iola-Scandinavia (57), Pacelli (53), Tri-County (39 1/2), Almond-Bancroft (39), Assumption (14) and Port Edwards (6). Team scores for the girls were Wild Rose (132), Weyauwega-Fremont (109), Pittsville (104), Rosholt (95 1/2), Manawa (76 1/2), Pacelli (43), Iola-Scandinavia (40), Assumption (28), Port Edwards (27), Tri-County (25) and Almond-Bancroft (9).

Weyauwega-Fremont’s first-place finishers included Abby Bartel (girls’ 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs 5:36.12, 11:46.97); Justin Kempf (boys’ pole vault, 12 feet, 9 inches); and Natalie Schneider, Katie Bleck, Allison Halat, Bartel, Morgan Monty and Anna Bubolz (girls’ 3,200-meter relay, 10:14.69).

Seconds went to Anna Bubolz (girls’ long jump); Muluken Rucks (boys’ pole vault); Bleck (girls’ 800-meter run); and Ean Marker, Drew Vandervest, Rucks, Sam Mason, Max Meyerhofer and Michael Schalkowski (boys’ 400-meter relay).

Thirds went to Patrick Long (boys’ 1,600-meter run); Katelyn Loehrke (girls’ discus); Mason (boys’ high jump); Austin Bartel (boys’ shot put); Halat (girls’ 800-meter run); Vandervest, Mason, Meyerhofer, Schalkowski, Rucks and Marker (boys’ 800-meter relay); Bubolz, Haley Dearth, Kaitlyn Bubolz, Schneider, Hannah Schuelke and Megan McGlin (girls’ 400-meter relay); and Anna Bubolz, Kaitlyn Monty, Schneider, Dearth, Schuelke and Josie Kicherer (girls’ 800-meter relay).

Fourths went to Loehrke (girls’ shot put); Jacob Carroll (boys’ 110-meter hurdles); Schneider (girls’ triple jump); Sawyer Hintz, Carroll, Martin Leyva, Mason, Christian Gonzalez and Cameron Borremans (boys’ 1,600-meter relay); and Hintz, Carson Kester, Leyva, Long, Josh Halat and Gonzalez (boys’ 3,200-meter relay).

Will Cady and Jada Beacom each won two events for Iola-Scandinavia. Cady won the boys’ triple jump (44 feet, 2 1/2 inches) and long jump (21 feet, 1 3/4 inches), while Beacom won the girls’ 400-meter dash (1:01.28) and 800-meter run (2:23.45).

Charlie Stockwell also won the boys’ discus (131 feet).

Seconds went to Stockwell, Erik Kriewaldt, Caden Prahl, Cady, Noah Olson and Erik Grenlie (boys’ 800-meter relay); and Makenna Brown, Sammie Glad, Beacom, Briar Williams, Payton Wester and Lybie Rosenthal (girls’ 1,600-meter relay).

Parker Prahl finished fourth in the boys’ triple jump.

Aspen Linjer and Laynie Bessette won events for Manawa and the Wolves also had a pair of winning relay teams.

Linjer won the girls’ 100- and 200-meter dash (12,71, 27.1), while Bessette won the girls’ long jump (16 feet, 4 3/4 inches). The girls’ 400-meter relay team of Ireland Griffin, Bessette, Mataya Moede, Linjer, Jaden Jaeger and Amber Fietzer (51.85) and the boys’ 400-meter relay team of Jackson Jaeger, Eli Yoder, Brett Zielke, Dakota Lane, Landon Sobiezczyk and Wyatt Nichols (45.59) also placed first.

Seconds went to Bo Koehn (boys’ 200- and 400-meter dash); Bessette (300-meter hurdles and triple jump); Jaeger (boys’ 100-meter dash); and Jaeger, Zielke, Grant Bristol, Koehn, Connor Scheid and Lane (boys’ 1,600-meter relay).

Zielke placed third in the boys’ triple jump, while fourths went to Bristol (boys’ 300-meter hurdles) and Makenzie Jo Krueger (girls’ 1,600-meter run).

The first four finishers at Division 2 and Division 3 sectionals and the first three in Division 1 will advance to the WIAA State Track & Field Championships, set for Friday and Saturday, May 31 and June 1, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
