Hortonville’s Rainey Welson finishes her high school career

Posted

A bitter-sweet finish to the end of Rainey Welson’s senior season as she closed out her year with an MCL sprain that will prevent her from finishing the season with her Hortonville teammates. Rainey’s future is bright as she heads to the University of  Maryland in the fall to join the Terrapins women’s basketball team.

Welson was named a Wisconsin Ms. Basketball award finalist earlier this season and started playing basketball at four in the YMCA league. “I am the youngest of four, so I have three older siblings, and they all play basketball, so I’ve been in the gym since I was in a stroller.”

Rainey, on her choice to attend Maryland, “so obviously the recruiting process is very long. It can take your entire high school career. I enjoyed it. I like talking to the different coaches and seeing different cultures. At the end of the day, when I finally did narrow it down, Marilyn was a no-brainer. “Welson continued, “There in the Big Ten, my family can watch and from an education standpoint.”

“My basketball I.Q. I’ve always worked on. I like to hear what coaches think, and I’ve always digested it and be the best I can be.” I study film and study teams, and I love learning about the game, different offenses and defenses, and how to pick that all apart.”  Rainey said of the strengths in her game, “I think that’s what differentiates me is because, I’m very knowledgeable about what I’m doing.”

Rainey, on what she will take from her time at Hortonville,” Hortonville High School alone. I have plenty of memories. I’ve been on varsity since my freshman year, I’ve played with talented players, D1 players and Hortonville has always been a top program, and to be a part of that culture and playing with my teammates and best friends.”
