Man arrested for strangulation

STEVENS POINT—On April 24 at 12:33 a.m., Stevens Point police officers responded to a call of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers met with a woman who was choked by the father of her child. Officers were initially unable to locate the father at the scene, but eventually arrested Benjamin Luis Richards of Kronenwetter.
Richards, 21, was charged with Strangulation and Suffocation, Criminal Damage to Property, and Disorderly Conduct (all with domestic abuse modifiers). Richards appeared by video, in custody, to the bail hearing on the afternoon of April 24. At this time a signature bond of $1,000 was set. Additionally, Richards was instructed to have no contact with the victim or to be present at any residence or premise where she is located.
The charge of Strangulation and Suffocation is classified as a Class H Felony in Wisconsin and if convicted can carry up to six years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000. The charge of Criminal Damage to Property is classified as a Class A Misdemeanor in Wisconsin and if convicted count entail up to 9 months in jail and/or a $10,000 fine. The charge of Disorderly Conduct is classified as a Class B Misdemeanor is Wisconsin and if convicted is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of $1,000.
