One and done for Waupaca boys

Posted

There were plenty of bright spots for the Waupaca boys’ basketball team this season, including an overall winning record, a fourth-place finish in the North Eastern Conference standings and a home game for the first round of the WIAA state tournament.

Unfortunately, the tournament opener didn’t work out for the Comets. Their season ended March 4 with a 92-61 loss to Menasha in a Division 2 regional quarterfinal at Waupaca High School.

Waupaca headed into the tournament with a No. 7 seed while the 10th-seeded Bluejays never trailed and had five players in double figures.

Menasha’s JC Mukome set the tone seconds after the opening tipoff with a dunk that gave the Bluejays an early lead. Although Waupaca tied the game twice in the opening minutes, the Comets never had a lead.

The Bluejays used a 15-0 run to take a 31-14 lead, led by as many as 22 points in the first half, and took a 52-34 lead into the locker room at the break.

Waupaca never got any closer than 16 points in the second half, and the Bluejays led by as many as 33 points late in the game.

Aaron Wolff scored a game-high 23 points in his final basketball game for the Comets, while Kanye Bessman and Westen Lauritzen added 19 and eight, respectively. No other player finished with more than four points.

Josiah Hibbler led Menasha with 22 points. Trayveon Lockridge added 18, CK White scored 11 and Mukome and Tayden Wilke chipped in with 10 each.
Waupaca ended its season with a 13-12 record and an 11-7 mark in conference play.
