NEW LONDON – New London Police Chief Jeffrey Schlueter has announced that he will be retiring from law enforcement on March 14.
Schueter, who has completed 29 years of service in law enforcement for the city of New London, the last 15 years as the chief of police, made the announcement to the New London Common Council at its Feb. 19 meeting.
“It’s been the honor of my lifetime,” Schlueter told the council. “And I’d like to thank you for all your support. Letting you know that we have a great foundation built at the police department. We’ve got some good young talent coming up. I think you’ll be in good hands in the future.”
Schlueter said he’s going to be starting a second career “down the road.”
On Friday, Feb. 21, there was a post on the New London Police Department’s Facebook page from Schlueter, announcing his retirement.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Citizens, the New London Police and Fire Commission, the City Council, the Mayors of New London, my colleagues at City Hall, other area law enforcement agencies and the officers and dispatchers of the New London Police Department for your unwavering support throughout the years,” said Schlueter in the Facebook post. “It has truly been an honor to serve this community, and I believe we have laid a strong foundation for law enforcement in New London. The NLPD is filled with exceptional talent, and I have full confidence that they will continue to serve with excellence in the future.
According to the post, Captain Josh Wilson will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement is appointed.
