Waupaca football preview

Posted

The Waupaca Comets finished the 2025 season strong, winning their last three of four games, but went 0-5 to start the season, finishing 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the Bay Conference.

The Comets will have a lot to overcome in 2026, as they lose several all-conference players on both sides of the ball.

Waupaca graduated quarterback Austin Adamczak, who passed for 876 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 377 yards and eight touchdowns last season and was named second-team All-Bay conference, and loses first-team standout Justin Olson on the offensive line.

Another key loss is senior Westen Lauritzen, who was a second-team All-Bay conference selection at wide receiver, catching 35 passes for 695 yards and six touchdowns in 2025, but went down in the offseason with a knee injury.

The offense will now be built around senior wide receiver Erik Harms, who had 18 receptions for 195 yards and was named an honorable mention last season.

Olson’s presence will be missed on the defensive line as well, as he had 23 tackles and three for loss, anchoring the Comets defense.

Waupaca will also look for someone to step up for second-team all-conference defensive back Ryder Vergauwen has graduated after leading the Comets with 95 tackles last season, as well as having three tackles for loss, a sack and two forced fumbles.

The Lauritzen injury also impacts them on the defense, as he was an honorable mention defensive back who had 37 tackles, one for loss, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Honorable Mention defensive lineman Zane Trice, who posted 34 tackles, six tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks last season, returns, along with Wyatt Buening, who had 78 tackles, 12 for loss, four sacks and a fumble recovery, as he was named honorable mention inside linebacker in his sophomore season.
