Depot restoration

Volunteers erected a telegraph pole next to the Waupaca train depot Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Built in 1907, the old Soo Line railroad depot was a major transportation hub for Waupaca for decades. Passenger service to Waupaca ended in 1965 and the building was left vacant.

In 2004, the Waupaca Historical Society purchased the depot and began the long process of restoring the facility.

In the photo, Gary Otterson, a retired Soo Line signal maintainer, places a telegraph pole into the bucket of a front-end loader operated by his brother John. Otterson was able to find all the parts for the pole, including the three 10-foot cross arms, brackets, bolts and insulators.
