Winneconne takes pair from Waupaca

Any momentum the Waupaca softball team had from sweeping a doubleheader from Appleton Xavier didn’t last very long.

The Comets dropped 9-0 and 9-2 Eastern Valley Conference games April 22 to Winneconne.

Waupaca also picked up two wins April 20 over Xavier.

WINNECONNE – The Comets struggled at the plate and couldn’t stop a trio of Winneconne players that came up with 13 hits between them.

The Wolves took a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning of the first game and tacked on four more runs.

Emerie Vasquez took the loss on the mound as Winneconne outhit the Comets 13-2.

Mandy Tomlinson had three hits and drove in both of Waupaca’s runs in the second game, but the Wolves outhit the Comets 14-5.

Annika Gereau had five hits in the two games for Winneconne, while MJ Behm and Hannah Peerenboom added four each.

Peerenboom also had four RBI in the two wins, while Abby King hit a home run.

WAUPACA – Tomlinson scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game.

Xavier took a 6-1 lead into the fifth inning, but the Comets came up with five runs in the fifth, two of them coming on Tasha Smith’s home run.

Vasquez picked up the win on the mound, while Lindsay Reach and Tomlinson each had two of Waupaca’s six hits.

Waupaca came up with five runs in the second inning of the second game, thanks to a pair of hits, including Taylor Ebert’s two-run single, and three Xavier errors.

Vasquez got the victory in the second game as well. Reach and Ebert each had two hits for the Comets.

Waupaca’s nonconference home game with Iola-Scandinavia originally scheduled for Friday, April 26, has been cancelled. The Comets will also host Berlin today (Thursday, April 25) for an EVC doubleheader, with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
