Farmstand is a recipe for local collaboration

Posted

WAUPACA – A new farmstand has popped up in King at 81 Market and features fresh baked goods made by stay-at-home moms.
Mama’s Farmstand began as a way to make some extra money so owner Alicia Bruette could stay at home to take care of her young kids while still using her culinary skills.
Bruette went to Fox Valley Technical College for culinary arts and spent a great deal of time working in various kinds of restaurants.
“I worked in supper clubs and delis and all different kinds of aspects of the industry and trying to find what I loved the most,” she said. “It always came back to baking.”
Bruette’s stand has grown to include a collaborative environment with women that have similar skill sets and are also balancing working with raising young children.

Bruette said that with the state’s cottage food laws, it is easier for independent bakers to sell homemade goods made in their very own kitchen.
These laws allow home bakers to sell shelf-stable goods without a commercial license.
This law allows direct-to-consumer sales of items that do not require refrigeration.
Bruette first opened a stand in Hortonville, where she currently resides, soon after an opportunity arose to open another in King.
The partnership that brought Mama’s Farmstand to 81 Market began when a mutual friend of Bruette and Lori Sasse, owner of 81 Market, asked Bruette to bake an “emergency cake” after another baker fell through.
Bruette, who had the supplies on hand, quickly “whipped up” the cake, which was for Sasse’s stepdaughter.
After that, Sasse then went to the farmstand with her mom in Hortonville to try more of Bruette’s baking, she said everything she bought was delicious and high quality.
Sasse said shortly after trying more of her baked goods, she offered her the opportunity to open a stand at 81 Market, which Bruette took her up on.
Sasse said so far, the stand has been quite popular as she has seen quite a bit of traffic come through.
Bruette said her biggest sellers are her cookies, she also sells Chex mix with three different flavors she has perfected, candied pecans and various flavors of scones
One of Bruette’s favorite scone recipe is her turtle scone, with chocolate chips, pecans and caramel bits.
True to its name, Mama’s Farmstand features a variety of sourdough flavors and other specialty treats contributed by fellow stay-at-home moms who collaborate with Bruette to offer a wider selection of baked goods.
The farm stand in Waupaca is open Fridays and Saturdays in June from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and in July it will be open Thursday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The stand in Waupaca is located at 81 Market, N2728 County Road QQ, and the stand in Hortonville is located at W10657 Shaky Lake Road.
Cash and Venmo are accepted at each location.
Bruette said she will do preorders, which can be ordered by calling 920-249-0102, you can also send a message on Facebook to MAMA’s Farm Stand.
