Almanac predicts early winter weather

Posted

COUNTY – Winter will come quick and cold to Wisconsin according to the formula used by the Farmer’s Almanac who released their annual winter weather forecast last week.
Their fall forecast for the Upper Midwest is of the most interest: “The North Central states and Great Lakes region will lead the charge into colder, more winter-like conditions, experiencing some of the earliest and most persistent chilly weather of the season. By mid-October, these areas could even see the first hints of winter, with some snow possible in higher elevations.”
They also note that autumn will be rainier than usual all the way up to Thanksgiving.
For winter weather in the Upper Midwest, the almanac predicts temperatures will be around normal average and will be punctuated by: “Fast-moving clippers, sudden cold snaps, and brief snowy periods are likely, although milder breaks may frequently interrupt the wintry weather.”
The Farmer’s Almanac has published these predictions since 1918 using a private and never-published formula that involves sun and moon patterns, historical weather trends and tidal action. Their accuracy claim is between 80 to 85 percent with outside reviewers calculating it is a little lower.
