City to move forward with municipal ambulance service

Decision made at special council meeting

CLINTONVILLE – At a special Clintonville Common Council meeting Sept. 3, the council unanimously directed staff to proceed with establishing a municipal ambulance service effective Jan. 1, 2027.

The decision to proceed with the creation of a municipal ambulance service came after the Clintonville Area Ambulance Service Commission took no action at its Aug. 24 meeting on approving a new municipal agreement that included changes recommended by the city of Clintonville.

It was stated in a Sept. 4 press release from the city of Clintonville, that currently, the city is a member of the Clintonville Area Ambulance Service (CAAS), which serves Clintonville, the city of Marion, the villages of Bear Creek and Embarrass, and the townships of Bear Creek, Deer Creek, Dupont, Grant, Larrabee, Matteson, and Navarino.

According to the press release, Clintonville Mayor Jeannie Schley indicated that the city would continue to partner with surrounding municipalities.

“While we are disappointed that our efforts to renegotiate the current agreement were unfruitful, Clintonville will continue to work in partnership with our neighbors for emergency services,” said Schley in the press release. “The dedicated first responders who serve our community will continue to do just that, regardless of the name on the ambulance or color of their uniform.”

Earlier this year, Clintonville, Marion, and Dupont filed notice of their intent to leave the CAAS in 2027, it was stated in the press release. On Aug. 31, Marion held a special meeting and voted to join the Manawa Rural Ambulance Service.

While the press release stated that Clintonville would “continue to work in partnership with our neighbors for emergency services,” there was no mention of what that partnership would be or how Clintonville would fund an ambulance service.
