Community bulb planting honors veterans, U.S. heritage

Posted

NEW LONDON — The New London American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Community Bulb Planting Day on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the entrance to Hatten Park.
The planting commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The group planted 250 blue grape hyacinth bulbs in recognition of the upcoming celebration next year.
Volunteers helped plant the bulbs in honor of those who have served to preserve the nation’s freedom.
“We are excited to add this perennial border to the garden to honor all who have served to maintain our freedom,” said garden committee chair Lynne Finch.
The Auxiliary adopted the two flowerbeds at the park entrance through the city’s Adopt-a-Bed program and has maintained the site since spring 2024.

The bulbs will bloom each May, returning annually as a living tribute to veterans and community pride.
