UPDATED: Gunfire leads to standoff, death

Posted

WAUTOMA – On Oct. 16 at 5:25 p.m., Waushara County Sheriff deputy and a Wisconsin State trooper checked on a domestic violence call at a home near the intersection of State Road 73 and County Trunk O. When they arrived, a man was standing outside and he retreated in the house. From within the house, he fired a gun at the deputy and the deputy fired back.
The man barricaded himself in the house and officers tried negotiating with him. The Portage County Tactical Team and the Stevens Point/Plover Tactical Team showed up. Officers heard gunshots inside the house and tried to communicate with the man. There was no reply. They entered the house and found the man dead.
No law enforcement officers were injured. The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is conducting a death investigation.
They will review evidence and determine the facts and turn over their findings to Waushara County District Attorney’s Office.

UPDATED

In a memo from Attorney General Josh Kaul, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal has confirmed that the male subject is 51-year-old Timothy Lehman. When he retreated into his residence, he fired a gun at Deputy Alex Midthun, an officer with 4.5 years of law enforcement experience with the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office,

Midthun returned fire. Lehman barricaded himself inside the house while officers tried to negotiate with him. When the officers finally entered the residence,  Lehman was found dead and that Midthun’s gunshots likely hit the Lehman, and he did not die from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Deputy Midthun is on administrative leave.
