Held at gunpoint, a woman escapes harm

Posted

OGDENSBURG — In the early morning hours of April 22, a young woman found herself in the parking lot of Sentry Foods in Iola. She was bleeding from the head but she escaped without getting shot. Her legs were bruised and there was a cut on her right knee.
Unknown to her and moments before, her sister called 911 and reported that Gabriel R. Deglow, 20, had pulled a gun on her sister [the victim] at a residence on Saint Lawrence Street in Ogdensburg. She said she heard loud banging and saw Deglow in the driveway as the victim fled in a vehicle.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim was in a relationship with Deglow for two years but they broke up. She allowed him to stay at her parents’ house because he had nowhere else to go. The violence started in February. At first, he broke her things and punched holes in the walls. On April 16, she was watching television when her new boyfriend called. Deglow noticed the caller’s name on her screen and blew up, calling her names and yelling and then he lifted his shirt, exposing a handgun tucked in his waistband. He paced around her and she described it like a shark circling its prey. She went to her sister’s bedroom and Deglow tackled her hard enough to leave bruises.
On the evening of April 22, she learned Deglow had sex with another woman in her bed. She asked him about it and he denied it. Things escalated into a shoving match. He grabbed her by the throat and slammed her down, whacking her head on the kitchen countertop. He tried to console her and she kicked at him and he grabbed her legs and they wrestled and she escaped into her sister’s bedroom and locked the door. She heard him go outside and come back in. She decided to leave. He tackled her again and he pressed his handgun between her eyes. It left a red mark.
They scuffled some more and she pushed him as hard as she could and she heard the gun slide across the kitchen floor. She grabbed her purse and sprinted for her car. She got in and the doors automatically locked just as Deglow grabbed the door handle. He banged on the window with his handgun and pointed it at her through the window, finger on the trigger.
The banging on the car window woke up her sister and the sister looked out the window and called 911.
Deputies established a perimeter around the residence for approximately 45 minutes before clearing the scene. Deglow was later arrested in the home that same day without incident. Authorities say Deglow consented to a search of the residence, which resulted in the discovery of three firearms, ammunition and drug paraphernalia.
He was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety, false imprisonment, misdemeanor battery, and disorderly conduct. All four counts carry domestic abuse and use of a dangerous weapon enhancers.
