MANAWA – Area residents looking for a creative outlet and a chance to socialize can find both at the Sturm Memorial Library this summer through the Community Craft Connection program.
The free self-directed program runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday through August, with the exception of July 3. Participants are encouraged to bring a craft or project to work on while visiting with neighbors.
Library Director Sue Vater Olsen said the exploratory program grew out of a desire among community members for a place to work on projects while connecting with others.
“People are looking for ways to build or strengthen friendships and work with their hands,” Vater Olsen said. “Research demonstrates that these activities create improved mental wellbeing.”
The program is open to participants working on a wide variety of projects. Vater Olsen said attendees have brought crocheting, knitting, embroidery, card making and other crafts to Community Craft Connection.
“You can bring almost any project that is mobile from carving to hand quilting,” she said. “The library does have a number of supplies from simple kits to knitting needles and yarn available at the library for anyone that doesn’t know what they would like to try or doesn’t have the materials. The craft may be sketching or coloring and as simple or elaborate as the crafter wishes.”
While the program is primarily intended for adults, preteens and teenagers may attend if their behavior is appropriate for an adult-oriented setting. Vater Olsen noted that the library is specifically inviting “new adults” ages 18 to 25, a demographic that is often under-represented at the facility, she said.
According to Vater Olsen, participants are encouraged to communicate their needs or bring simpler projects if they have difficulty focusing on detailed work in a lively environment, as multiple conversations may occur at the same time.
Though librarians are present in the building, they will not formally lead the group. No registration is required and participants may bring beverages and snacks, but are expected to clean up after themselves.
The group meets in the library’s meeting room, though space will be provided in the magazine area if the room is needed for another library purpose.
“The goal is to provide a positive experience for all,” Vater Olsen said.
