Manawa Legion outlines Memorial Day schedule

Posted

MANAWA – The American Legion Stanley-Handrich Post 226 in Manawa will host a series of cemetery ceremonies and a community luncheon this Memorial Day to honor fallen veterans.

Post Commander Russ Wohlrabe outlined a full day of Memorial Day observances beginning at 9 a.m. at Royalton Cemetery, proceeding to Little Wolf/Sacred Heart Cemetery at 10 a.m., Manawa Area Veterans Freedom Park at 11 a.m., Symco Bridge at 11:45 a.m., Union Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. and Little Creek Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

The itinerary will include an introduction, an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, the reading of new names, and songs. The program will also feature a speaker, an Honors Firing squad, a Taps bugler, “Armed Forces on Parade,” and a closing prayer. A live band will accompany the morning ceremonies, while recorded band music will be played for the remainder of the program to simulate a live performance.

In between ceremonies, a picnic-style luncheon will be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. at the Union Town Hall. The Legion will provide barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, beans, chips and assorted beverages, including water, coffee, juice, and lemonade. The lunch is free of charge, though donations to the post are accepted to help with costs. Organizers ask that community members attending the lunch bring a dish to pass or a dessert.

In addition to Memorial Day preparations, Wohlrabe said the post is actively seeking new and younger members to join the local Legion family. Looking ahead to the rest of the year, Post 226 plans to host three brat fries and will hold a community car show on Oct. 3.
