New dock and launch planned for Silver Lake

SCANDINAVIA - The Scandinavia Booster club in partnership with the village has proposed a new pier and kayak launch at Silver Lake to replace a failing wooden structure.

The project is slated for construction this summer and features a dedicated kayak launch and docking for two motorized boats up to 24 feet.

The Booster Club recently submitted an application with a letter of support from the village for a Greenways grant through Waupaca County to support the project. Greenways grants are aimed at growing silent sports in the county, including walking, biking, hiking and kayaking.

Village President David Mork wrote in a letter of endorsement that the village has reviewed the Booster Club’s preliminary plans and found them to be consistent with local zoning ordinances and environmental protections.

“This new pier represents a modern, sustainable upgrade that meets current safety and environmental standards,” he wrote. “We are particularly supportive of Scandinavia Booster Club’s commitment to accessibility, ensuring that the waterfront is inclusive for area communities.”

Lena Johnson with the Booster Club said the new dock will be designed with eco-friendly materials that allow sunlight to pass through.

“This enhancement will improve safe, convenient and environmentally appropriate public access to Silver Lake for both non-motorized and select motorized watercraft users,” she said. “The installation of a purpose-built kayak launch and motorized boat docking will provide stable, designated entry points that improve accessibility while minimizing shoreline disturbance.”

The club is seeking funding through the Greenways grant, which is accepting applicants through May 15, supplemented by Booster Club contributions and public donations. Once completed, the village will assume ownership and maintenance of the pier and kayak launch.

Mork said the Scandinavia Village Board of Trustees stands fully behind the initiative.

“This project is an investment in the quality of life for our residents and the future of our shoreline,” he said.
