No-questions-asked food boxes

Posted

IOLA – On Thursday, Dec. 11, the Iola Food Pantry will host a “No Questions Asked Food Box Giveaway” for people in Iola and the surrounding communities. Between 3 and 6 p.m., those who need it can drive up to the food pantry, 395 E. Iola Street, and leave with a food box.
Rather than having set distribution times, the Iola Food Pantry historically has responded to calls from those in need. People who need food can call the pantry for an appointment to get the food or sundry items they need, up to six times a year.
Our Savior’s Pastor Gail Kenny explained that the church noticed that the demand for food at the Waupaca Area Food Pantry has been climbing substantially. Others pointed out that many families with school-age children are getting food through Project Backpack, she said.
Yet, when the church talked with Iola Food Pantry Director Sheila Olson, she said people haven’t been calling the pantry, which has space at Our Savior’s. There was a lot of food on the shelves.
That’s when the church council discussed that it might be a barrier for the community to ask for food. And that’s when Our Savior’s Council President Lee Halverson and other council members began talking to Olson about scheduling a one-day event where people could just come and receive.

No questions about whether they are getting food here or anywhere else, their family income, or if they are getting SNAP or other assistance. Volunteers will give out food boxes of staple foods until the boxes run out.
“Because of the generosity of many community member contributions, we have the privilege of distributing food to anyone who could use help in putting food on the family table, Halverson said.
Recently, the Iola Food Pantry’s food has come in from everywhere. A food drive from the Iola-Scandinavia High School DECA Club added a large supply, but food has also come from churches, organizations and individuals.
People picking up food should drive south on John Street from State Street to the church. Volunteers will give out boxes starting at 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., or until the boxes run out.
For more information contact Lee Halverson at 715-602-2832 or Pastor Gail Kenny at 715-445-2666.
