Pothole season arrives

Posted

WAUPACA – January seen its fair share of single-digit and subzero temperatures to start off 2026, but despite the cold and snow, city officials said the city is still sitting in a good spot.
At the Jan. 20 city council meeting, Justin Berrens, Director of Public Works in Waupaca, said the multiple snow and ice events have kept the city staff busy and the salt supply is still going strong. The salt reserves being robust as they are, is due to the large salt shed that was recently built for the city.
Potholes have been opening up across the city with the thawing and freezing temperatures. Berrens said that when things start to dry out the work crews will be filling as many potholes as they can; however, with consistent snow events and plowing, the fill most likely will not last long.
Berrens said the department takes comments from the public as to where potholes are and they will try to fix them as soon as they can.
The main phone number for the public works department is 715-258-4422.
Frost levels are also being monitored in the city, with two city residents being on a trickle notice during the cold spell in January so their pipes would not freeze.
