WEYAUWEGA - Students at Weyauwega-Fremont Elementary School marked Earth Day on April 28 by planting 250 trees, as part of a larger effort to celebrate the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
Students in 4K through fifth grade worked alongside Weyauwega-Fremont High School football players to plant the trees at the elementary school, which were donated by Richard and Kathy Wagner. The project recognized both Earth Week and the United States semiquincentennial in 2026.
A sign placed at the site reads, “Remembering 250 years of Freedom (1776-2026) … and growing. 250 trees planted by WF students on 4/28/2026.”
The tree planting was part of a day of activities organized by the Weyauwega Area Historical Society (WAHS). Earlier in the day, local actor Brad Leonhardt, dressed in vintage clothing, spoke to K-5 students about the significance of the project.
Additional events included a flag-raising ceremony in front of Dahlke Funeral Home. The “250 flag,” displayed by Mark Olson and Jon Dahlke, will fly at the corner of Main and Mill streets throughout 2026.
WAHS President Mary Jane Baehman said the event is one of several planned throughout the year to commemorate the country’s 250th birthday. The organization will focus on the milestone birthday of America celebration which includes a July 3 parade and festivities at the Waupaca County Fairgrounds, in place of its traditional Horse & Buggy Days and Beyond event.
