Jail inmate lies about beating

Posted

WAUPACA – On March 5, an inmate in the Waupaca County Jail submitted a form to jail staff stating he had been assaulted earlier that day. Deputy Kurszewski discussed the incident with the inmate that afternoon.
According to a criminal complaint, the inmate had a bruise by his right eye. He downplayed it, saying he fell in the shower and he didn’t need medical treatment.
Deputy Kurszewski suspected that wasn’t the real story so he checked the internal surveillance video from earlier that morning.
The jail camera footage showed Dondrick David Tackes, 29, of Wausau, sitting at a table in the dayroom area. The victim was sitting on his bunk inside Cell 3A3. They exchanged insults and the victim stood up and moved to the entrance of his cell.
Tackes walked over and entered the cell, pushing past another inmate and punched the victim in the face with his right fist and then a left and pushed the victim against the toilet and onto a bed, pinning him down. Tackes hit him with a barrage of right and left punches. The victim did not fight back. The men were separated and Tackes went back into the dayroom.
With this video evidence, the victim was removed from that area of the jail for his own safety and then examined by the medical staff and transported to ThedaCare-Waupaca. Later, the victim changed his initial story and provided an account that aligned with the surveillance footage.
Tackes has been charged with battery by prisoners, a Class H felony.
