IOLA – As of last week, Village of Iola residents could begin applying for a permit to keep backyard chickens after the village board approved an ordinance permitting hens in certain residential districts.
The ordinance allows up to six hens per property in most single-family and two-family residential neighborhoods. Roosters are prohibited. Selling eggs, breeding chickens for sale or slaughtering chickens on the property is also prohibited.
Residents who want to keep chickens must obtain a permit from the village and register with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Permits will run from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 each year and may require inspection for renewal.
The ordinance was approved following a public hearing March 10 at the Iola Village Hall Community Room.
