District changes insurance benefit brokers

CLINTONVILLE – The Clintonville School District has changed insurance benefit brokers from NIC to Brown & Brown after NIC was purchased by a different company.
The Clintonville Board of Education approved the change when it met Oct. 13.
At the meeting, Clintonville Superintendent Troy Kuhn told the board that the district’s current insurance benefits broker, NIC, was purchased by a different company and the district was not satisfied with the work the new company was doing for the district.
The district’s administrative team solicited proposals from other brokers and narrowed it down to three brokers, Kuhn said.
Kuhn said they met with those three brokers in-person and narrowed it to two companies. Follow-up interviews were then conducted.

“They were both very, very good,” Kuhn said. “The positive is with this whole process is they’re understanding our demographics, our needs. And possibly thinking outside the box, eventually moving to a self-funded, something like that.”
Kuhn recommended that the board approve Brown & Brown to serve as the district’s insurance benefits broker.
“Brown & Brown just seemed like they were more personal, they’re closer to Clintonville, and in addition to that, they represented school districts that had similar issues in the last couple years, and they navigated that, so we like them,” Kuhn said.
Board President Glen Drew Lundt asked if Brown & Brown would help educate district employees about insurance.
“They will come and educate and explain to the staff and not from me,” Kuhn said. “They’re going to physically be here. That was one of the non-negotiables.”
