No action taken on mission statement update

CLINTONVILLE – The Clintonville Board of Education took no action on approving a CESA 8 Additional Services proposal at a cost of $8,000 for the purpose of facilitating the district’s mission, vision, and values.
The matter was discussed at the board’s April 27 meeting. The proposal included updating the district’s mission, vision, and values, as well as creating a strategic plan that would be approved by the board to move the district forward. Representatives from CESA 8 had presented the proposal to the board at a previous board meeting.
“I don’t think we should be spending $8,000,” board member Jason Moder said. “If we’re going to do anything, we should attempt it without the aid and the cost of $8,000.”
Board Clerk Laurie Vollrath said she agreed with Moder.
Board President Ben Huber recommended that the board do some preliminary work on its own regarding the mission, vision, and values of the district, and then plan a board workshop to develop ideas. He added that the district could possibly solicit help from community members.

Board member Christopher Hoffmann, who had been a proponent of updating the district’s mission, vision and values, asked board members if everyone agreed the district’s mission statement needed to be updated.
Clintonville Superintendent Troy Kuhn disagreed that the mission statement needed to be updated.
“I love our mission statement,” Kuhn said.
Huber said he also liked the district’s current mission statement.
“That does not mean it should not be reviewed and updated,” Huber said. “And my one voice is not the voice of the community and the voice of the board.”
