CLINTONVILLE – Construction is underway at Clintonville Elementary School, where a new outdoor classroom is quickly becoming a reality. The project, several years in the making, began as a simple Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) fundraiser for playground equipment. Initially aiming to raise just a few hundred dollars by selling beef sticks, the fundraiser far exceeded expectations, sparking an even bigger vision among PTO members.
Encouraged by strong community support, the PTO shifted its focus toward creating an outdoor classroom—a space designed for both learning during the school year and community gatherings in the summer. The classroom, affectionately called the “Hickory Hut” after the PTO’s most popular beef stick flavor, was first estimated to cost about $12,000. As plans grew to better meet the needs of students and staff, so did the budget.
“I think that being able to learn in an outdoor environment with fresh air in a natural setting will boost focus, support mental health, and encourage creativity,” said PTO President Laurie Vollrath. “We really aren’t sure what features we want to include. Right now, we are just trying to get the building built. We want to make sure it is accessible to all students and staff.”
In March 2025, the PTO contributed $15,000 to the district to help bring the project to life. When more funds were needed, the community responded with overwhelming generosity. An anonymous $15,000 donation, along with contributions from local businesses and community members, helped push the project over the finish line.
“We got estimates, but after mapping it out, we realized we needed it bigger,” Vollrath explained. “In the end, we will have a 32’x32’ pavilion with wheelchair access. We want to have seating and possibly electricity at some point.”
