Second-seeded Waupaca Comets volleyball defeated seventh-seeded Medford in four sets in their regional playoff opener to advance to the next round.
The Comets got up early on Medford in the first set, as they went up 17-11. Ava Widdel scored on a kill to give Waupaca a 21-12 lead. The Comets finished off the set 25-18.
Medford went up 19-13 in the second set, and the Comets clawed back to tie the set at 24-24. Medford closed out the set winning 27-25 in match point.
In the third set, Waupaca’s Peyton Carlson reached her 2000th career kill, putting the Comets ahead 7-3. Waupaca kept up the momentum and won the set 25-21.
The Comets went on a 13-0 run to open the fourth set, as they defeated Medford 25-8 to advance to the regional final.

Waupaca Comets survive and advance against a sixth-seeded Lakeland team in the regional final on Oct. 25.
In the first set, Waupaca jumped out to a 13-4 lead, and continued to put the pressure on as Lakeland was forced to take a timeout as the Comets went up 20-8. Waupaca closed the first set, winning 25-13.
Lakeland tied up the match in the second set, as they defeated Waupaca 25-19.
In the fourth set, the Comets took the early lead before Lakeland started to mount a comeback, but Waupaca closed the door on the match with a kill by Carlson to finish the set 25-20 and win in four sets.
The Comets move on to the sectional and will travel to face top-seeded Mosinee on Oct. 30.
