Before she enters the doors of Waupaca High School, Mya Guyette has already shown her wrestling prowess and the potential to do great things once she takes to the mat at the next level.
Mya, who just finished her final season in middle school and will enter her high school freshman season in the fall, has been dominant on the mat as a seven-time state champion.
Beginning wrestling at seven years old, Mya started competing after seeing a flyer to join her school’s wrestling team.
Mya participates in both volleyball and softball, but wrestling has influenced her attitude in all sports. She has gained confidence in her mentality while competing at state, saying, “I had to overcome my own mental state and still pulled out a win.”
Still in her early years of wrestling, Mya has matured on the mat as she begins to appreciate her wins at state, “I was pretty young, couldn’t understand how big my accomplishments were until later in life, other than knowing how excited I was.”
That maturity has enabled her to help guide others and make herself coachable. “As I get older, it becomes more fun as I get to coach the little’s or if any older girls come and give me pointers or my coaches sitting in my corner.”
Mya’s coaches and teammates have helped her grow, including Bryan Pierg, Kyle Minnel, and teammate Aaliyah Miller.
The best attribute Mya has shown in her early career is her competitive desire: “My drive to not want to lose, and to make sure I’m putting my best foot forward.”
With her high school career ahead of her, Mya is already setting goals for herself:” Win a high school state title competing against different levels with upperclassmen.”
