Weyauwega-Fremont Warhawks reach semifinal at state

In a closely contested WIAA team wrestling state quarterfinal dual meet on March 6, 2026, the top seeded Weyauwega-Fremont Warhawks narrowly defeated the eighth seed Glenwood City 37–35 in a matchup filled with momentum swings, pins, and key bonus-point victories.

Weyauwega-Fremont opened strong at 132 pounds when junior Jake Buss (40–7) secured a first-period pin over Glenwood City’s Landon Standaert (19–16) in 1:18, giving WEFR an early boost. Glenwood City quickly responded at 138 pounds as Preston Arvey (44–11) earned a major decision over Dewayne Borntreger (28–14), winning 12–4.

At 144 pounds, Carter Birdyshaw (43–6) continued the momentum for Weyauwega-Fremont, pinning Corey Strong (10–11) in 1:30. Glenwood City answered again at 150 pounds with Landon Obermueller (43–17) recording a 9–0 major decision over Logan McDaniel (23–18).

The Hilltoppers gained ground at 157 pounds when Logan Hillman (32–21) defeated Camden Stichman (24–14) by decision, 13–7. However, Weyauwega-Fremont regained control in the middle weights. At 165 pounds, standout sophomore Collin Hamm (55–2) pinned Ben Standaert (29–20) in 2:25. Cooper Leschke (36–17) followed with another fall at 175 pounds over Zach Bacon (20–28) in 2:36.

Weyauwega-Fremont continued to add crucial points with Conner Mannel (28–7) earning a 13–3 major decision at 190 pounds over Abe Draxler (33–20), and Wyatt Wetzel (30–13) narrowly defeating Waylon Wagner (32–23) 9–7 at 215 pounds. Heavyweight Jared Bohringer (36–14) sealed another big moment for WEFR with a pin over Gus Kohler (5–5) in 3:23.

Despite the loss, Glenwood City closed the dual with a surge. Tristan Knops (31–16) at 106 pounds, Elliott Radintz (44–13) at 113, Waylon Fry (48–5) at 120, and William Obermueller (47–11) at 126 all picked up victories by forfeit.
Even with Glenwood City’s late run, Weyauwega-Fremont’s pins and bonus-point wins earlier in the dual proved decisive, allowing them to hold on for the narrow 37–35 victory.

In the Division 3 semifinal dual, Aquinas narrowly defeated Weyauwega-Fremont, 36–33, in a matchup that came down to the final bouts. Both teams traded momentum throughout the night, with several matches ending in pins and key decisions that ultimately allowed Aquinas to escape with the three-point victory.

Aquinas started the dual with a win at 106 pounds as freshman Peter White secured a 6–3 decision over Weyauwega-Fremont’s Zander Baehnman, giving Aquinas the early advantage.

Weyauwega-Fremont responded quickly in the next three weight classes. At 113 pounds, Jaydon LeNoble pinned Ayden Lorenz in just 52 seconds. The momentum continued at 120 pounds when Josue Azuara earned a first-period pin against Mason Klar, and Rylan Konen followed with another fall at 126 pounds over Reid Nicklay to extend the lead.

Aquinas answered with a dominant middle stretch that proved critical to the final result. At 132 pounds, Martez Sheard pinned Dewayne Borntreger in 1:06 to halt the run. Sophomore Tyler Paulson followed with a pin of his own at 138 pounds over Jake Buss, and senior Roger Flege continued the surge with a fall at 144 pounds against Logan McDaniel.

The momentum remained with Aquinas as freshman Jacob Penzkover delivered a major decision, 9–1, over Carter Birdyshaw at 150 pounds. Shortly after, Grady Nicklay added another pin for Aquinas at 157 pounds, defeating Camden Stichman in 1:47 and helping Aquinas build a crucial lead.

Weyauwega-Fremont fought back in the upper weights. At 165 pounds, standout sophomore Collin Hamm earned a 9–5 decision over Waylon Hargrove, followed by a 9–6 decision by Cooper Leschke over Marcus Klar at 175 pounds. The comeback effort continued at 190 pounds when Conner Mannel pinned Salvatori Trussoni, and Wyatt Wetzel secured a 13–8 decision over Isaac Miller at 215 pounds.

With the dual still hanging in the balance, the heavyweight match proved decisive. Aquinas senior Tyson Martin delivered a dominant performance, defeating Jared Bohringer by technical fall, 18–2, in 2:37. The victory sealed the 36–33 win for Aquinas and punched their ticket to the Division 3 championship round.
