Weyauwega-Fremont’s multi-sport standout Chamille Birdyshaw looks for return to state

Posted

Chamille Birdyshaw is a talented three-sport athlete at Weyauwega-Fremont, making a name for herself with the Warhawks. She has competed twice at the WIAA state girls’ track and field meet. In basketball, she earned All-Central Wisconsin Conference-East honors and has committed to play flag football at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Chamille started playing each sport at various ages with some prompting from different influences in her life. “I started competing in track when I was 13 years old, basketball when I was 11 years old, and flag football when I was 17 years old.” “Coach Zimmerman and Coach Hansen introduced me to flag football, but my mom introduced me to track and has helped me get better and better, and my friends got me into basketball when I was younger.”

“Track has always been my favorite until I started playing flag football,” says Chamille, who participates in the sprint and long jump events in track and field and just last season competed at state where she ran a 12.94 in the 100 meter and recorded a 16.00.50 in the long jump, as well as being part of Weyauwega-Fremont’s 4x200 relay team that posted an eighth place finish.”

While being a multisport athlete, Chamille has found ways to navigate her time competing as well as her time in the classroom,” Balancing my academics and my athletics, my freshman year was a struggle, I would say, but finding ways to balance them both has helped me a lot. I feel very stressed when it comes to homework and not feeling like I have time due to athletics outside of school, but something that has helped me is writing out a schedule.”

Sharing her achievements with teammates keeps Chamille motivated in sports. “My favorite part about track, no doubt about it, is winning, but when you see that finish line, and you look past it and see your teammates cheer about you, it is definitely something you’ll never forget. I stick with it for so long because of the team, they are always there for you, no matter what.”

Chamille on the attributes that have made her successful, “for every sport I would say my mental fortitude and physical speed and power.”

The personal growth that Chamille has experienced in her high school career will undoubtedly be expanded upon in college as well. “It feels good to see my growth in both a person and an athlete and to feel the confidence that has grown with me with anything I try to do.”
