STEVENS POINT — The Common Council approved a $125,000 facilities study during their June 15 meeting.
In a 10-1 vote, the council approved a Request for Proposals which will allow for a comprehensive evaluation of all city-owned properties. The vote of approval will allow the process to begin of seeking bids from consulting firms, which will cost around $125,000.
Alderperson Kneebone was the sole voice of opposition on the Council, calling the study a potential “waste of taxpayer dollars.” Kneebone argued that the city department directors already know the conditions of the properties and have plans for what they need. She also noted that basic data on the city’s 145 insured structures has already been collected and compiled by the treasurer’s office, questioning the need to pay an outside firm to gather data that the city staff could provide. Kneebone also raised concern about ensuring the facilities study remains unbiased.
Alderperson Christensen showed support for the study, stating that city staff and directors know the buildings, but may not have specialized expertise to assess elements like plumbing, electrical systems, and more. Christensen stated a neutral third party would prevent “million-dollar mistakes.”
School board member Meg Erler shared her support for the study, stating that a similar study in 2018 for the school district allowed them to qualify for $25.9 million in energy efficiency funding.
With the Request for Proposals approved in the 10-1 vote, the Common Council will later seek a vote to award the contract.
