STEVENS POINT — During a Feb. 16 Common Council meeting, council members unanimously voted to approve a $150,000 grant to Partnering Together Portage County to purchase a building for a homeless shelter.
Located at 2854 Church Street, the former Oddfellows building will be purchased by the homeless coalition with help from the city’s grant. It will not be immediately ready for guests upon purchase and will require renovations in order to remain open day and night, year round.
When the grant is awarded at the time of closing, the coalition will be required to operate a homeless shelter or resource center within 12 months or the building will revert ownership to the city.
Additionally, a no-camping ordinance was passed at the same time, which will take effect only once the shelter is open and operational.
