STEVENS POINT — The Common Council has unanimously approved conditional use permits for the operation of the NEXUS Safety Center.
Stevens Point and Mid-State Technical College have partnered together on the future of safety center that will both educate and serve the community.
To be located on Badger Avenue immediately south of Lands’ End, the future safety center will consist of an educational space, a third City fire station, an indoor shooting range operated by the Stevens Point Police Department, and exterior training areas to support those learning and training in the EMS, fire, law enforcement, and corrections fields.
The proposed 71,000 square foot facility will combine education with service, with a new fire station located on the property improving call times and increasing the ability to serve the area.
“This project will support the development of modern, purpose-built training environments designed to prepare the next generation of public safety professionals. The NEXUS Center will expand access to high-demand career pathways in fire protection, law enforcement, corrections, and emergency medical services.” Benjamin Nusz, dean of Mid-State’s Stevens Point campus, stated. “The project enhances public safety for nearby residents and the broader community.”
Alderperson Mary Kneebone voiced her support for the project, “As someone who lives on the east side, this is so exciting. It’s going to make a lot of people over there feel much more comfortable. It’s going to provide an outlet for a lot of recruits who will hopefully stay here and continue to serve our community.”
The project is estimated to be completed in fall 2029, with construction dependent on approvals and funding.
