Is 6th grade elementary school or middle school?

Task force evaluates grade configurations

Posted

STEVENS POINT — The Point Proud Schools 2040 Task Force has begun evaluating grade configurations within the district. Members discussed the current grade structure of schools, being K-6th grade, 7th-9th grade, and 10-12th grade, as well as alternative grade configurations.
During a July 15 meeting, the task force began early discussions on how grades are structured within the district’s schools. Prior to diving into possible alternatives, members discussed declining enrollment and building conditions of district schools. Members were presented with impacts and student opportunities that could be available to 9th graders if they were relocated from Ben Franklin Junior High School and PJ Jacobs Junior High School to Stevens Point Area High School.
The task force discussed the following possible alterative grade structures:
Option A: K-5th grade, 6-7th grade, 8-9th grade, 10-12th grade
Option B: K-6th grade, 7-8th grade, 9-12th grade

Option C: K-5th grade, 6-8th grade, 9-12th grade
Option C received the most support from task force members, which is the most commonly used grade structure by other Wisconsin schools. On a preliminary ranking, task force members ranked Option C as their first choice, Option A as their second choice, the current configuration as their third choice, and Option B as their fourth choice. The preliminary ranking only reflects early thoughts and is not a recommendation or final decision.
The task force will meet again on Aug. 5 and are expected to discuss the potential for building consolidation, the ability to accommodate 9th graders at SPASH, and if changes to the grade structure should be phased over several years.
