Mya Dernbach is one of the top returning scorers in the state and plays for an Almond-Bancroft team ranked in the top 10 in Division 5 girls’ basketball. She’s a two-time All-Central Wisconsin Conference-South pick and led her team to the WIAA Regional final. Now, as a senior, Mya is focused on helping her team achieve even more.
During her junior year in 2024-2025, Mya showed her all-around skills by averaging 21 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 3.6 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game.
Mya has improved from those impressive numbers in his senior season, averaging 24.4 points (10th best in the state), 6.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 4.1 steals and 1.2 blocks.
Being introduced to the sport in the second grade by her parents, Mya has proven how dynamic she is on the court with a clutch playoff moment that sticks out to her in her high school career:” the game-winning shot against Greenwood in the regional semifinal my junior year.”
Mya has also been a standout on the softball field as a three-time All -CWC-South centerfielder and has lasting memories in the ballpark as well, “Going to state in softball my junior year and getting runner-up.”
From her freshman year to her senior year, Mya has noticed that she has become more independent with her studies. “ I’d say the biggest difference is that I have online classes now that I have to work on at my house, now that I didn’t have to do my freshman year.”
Her leadership skills and being part of a team have been Mya’s favorite part of high school athletics. “My favorite part about basketball is that I got to grow up with the girls in my class playing together.” And has enjoyed the experience of helping younger players, “ I would say my biggest asset is that I’m a good person that the underclassmen can look up to, I feel like I handle pressure fairly well, and that is part of being a leader.”
Mya looks fondly at her time at Almond-Bancroft, “It feels kind of surreal, like I never would have thought I would have accomplished all I have when I was a freshman. “
