Threats against Tomorrow River School District

Posted

PORTAGE COUNTY — On Feb. 13, at approximately 7:35 p.m., the Portage County Communications Center received a report of threatening messages being sent to a Portage County resident and employee of the Tomorrow River School District.
Upon further investigation by the sheriff’s office, it was determined that several unsolicited messages were received that were threatening in nature to the victim and victim’s family. Some messages were directed to the victim’s role with the Tomorrow River School District. Deputies conducted further investigation and located a possible suspect, Richard Schneider.
Deputies were able to contact Schneider at his residence. During their interaction, Schneider admitted to sending messages and provided deputies with his phone. The messages on the phone matched the messages presented by the victim. Schneider stated he did not believe the messages were threatening in nature.
Schneider was placed under arrest and request for charges for Terrorist Threats and Unlawful use of a Communication System was forwarded to the District Attorney.
Due to the nature of the threats being directed towards a staff member at the Tomorrow River School District, a heavier law enforcement presence was present at the school to ensure staff and student safety.
Later in the afternoon, Schneider had his initial court appearance and was subsequently issued a $10,000 cash bond with the following conditions of release: no contact with the victim or family, no contact with the Tomorrow River School District including maintaining a distance of 500 feet from all school property and no social media, no alcohol consumption, do not possess any firearms.
He is currently being held in the Portage County Jail.
